CHALLENGING VATICAN OPPRESSION

a public action of witness and protest sponsored by
the Rainbow Sash Movement and The Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby.

Join us as we publicly condemn the recent Vatican document attacking gay unions and symbolically return it to the Catholic Church marked "REJECTED!"

When: 10:30 am, Sunday August 31
for meeting – then to St Patrick’s Cathedral 
Where: Fitzroy Gardens, Cnr, Albert and Lansdowne Sts, East Melbourne.

Dress: Please wear rainbow colours if possible - hats, scarves, vests etc.

Attitude: This is a totally peaceful public action. It is NOT a chance to vent anger. We will gather for a disciplined, symbolic protest near (but not inside) the Catholic Cathedral, and, in the spirit of Ghandi and Martin Luther King, we will remain non-violent in word and action. All who take part must commit themselves to this attitude and spirit, and agree to follow the directions of the organisers of the action.

On July 31 the Vatican, on the direct order of the Pope, issued a world-wide declaration.

This document:** condemned all homosexual unions or marriages  as evil, depraved, deviant and a danger to marriage, the family and the good of society.

** ordered politicians, as a matter of "grave moral duty", to actively oppose all legislation which would give rights of ANY kind to such unions, and to work to repeal any such legislation where it exists.

** advised Christians to lobby governments to "contain the phenomenon" of homosexual unions and to avoid exposing young people to erroneous ideas about sexuality and marriage that would deprive them of their necessary defences and contribute to the spread of the phenomenon".

** claimed allowing adoption by gay couples "would actually mean doing violence to these children..."

We must publicly denounce this Vatican campaign against gay relationships and gay love.
We must stand up for our civil rights and our spiritual freedom.
We must call all people of good will, especially our politicians, to stand with us.
Together let us offer a strong, dignified challenge and expose the lies and bigotry that oppress us.
